More and Better Animations

The improved rendering of the characters in The Sims 2 will make the adult experience more interesting, of course, but beyond that, if fan artists can figure out how to get their own animations into the game we can expect to see much more elaborate and accurate behavior.

Consider, for example, this little animation from one of the clothing booths available at Red Light Sims. It's actually just part of the whole animation and the angle of view is better than the standard look-down perspective we get in the game. For an object in The Sims, it's really a nice presentation of the subject matter. This is just an animated gif, so the animation is limited in comparison with the actual presentation in the game. Get the real clothing booths from Red Light Sims to see the real thing. (Several additional versions of the clothing booth are available on the site.)

In contrast, look at this outstanding depiction of the same kind of fun from Somavision, an on-line computer game. The quality of the graphics looks to be similar to what we can expect from The Sims 2, even down to the lighting effects. Whether we can provide the same quality of animation remains to be seen, but from the movie trailers we expect that our key limitation might be some EA-proprietary data format. Other than the potential for proprietary data formats we will be limited only by our imaginations and the time it takes to express our ideas in the electronic world. We should emphasize that the Somavision characters are not sims and the characters were not created by Maxis! We don't expect Maxis to include anything very explicit in the basic game for The Sims 2 any more than they did for the original version of the game. Electronic Arts wants to market the game with a "Teen" rating. So it's up to us to add the fun stuff. Oh? You really like that one, eh?
